TROOP 479 - Poway, California  USA

BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA

Our Troop has a very high percentage of Scouts who

make Eagle!

Troop History

Troop 479 was conceived in the latter part of 1987 by Lt. Richard Eyde; an Eagle Scout, Naval Officer and member of American Legion Post 479. The Troop Charter was approved in November of 1988. Through the diligent efforts of Lt. Eyde, the first meeting was held in the multi-purpose room of the Poway Community Center with eight boys in attendance. The first Court of Honor was held in May of 1988. On June 15, 1994, Troop 479 honored its first Eagle Scout. Several more followed in rapid succession, and continue on to present time.

Our emphasis is on the outdoor program and advancement while maintaining a fun atmosphere. Our goal is to let the boys run the troop using the Patrol Method with the guidance of the adult leaders. All adult leaders are required to have current YPG (Youth Protection Guidelines) training and Scout specific training. Many of our seasoned leaders are also trained in specialties such as High Adventure.

The outdoor program is based on “Woods Wisdom”, coupled with a monthly outing. Our campouts usually incorporate a theme, such as orienteering, wilderness survival, cooking, etc. Our monthly campouts generally alternate between backpacking treks and car camps. A good time is always guaranteed! Other events enjoyed by the Troop include flag ceremonies on Memorial and Veteran’s Day in conjunction with American Legion Post 479 as well as the annual San Diego Scout Fair.

Although true in many things, we feel it is especially true that you get out of something what you put into it! If your son works hard, knows his advancement position and actively participates, he will advance rapidly. Our goal is that he reach the rank of 1st Class within one year. While troop meetings, the outdoor program and other activities are designed to help your son grow, advance and mature in Scouting, he needs the full support of his parents. Your commitment to his Scouting will make his experience more meaningful; your son will thrive when encouraged by you! Get involved - your interest will show how much you care!
